We Welcome the MadFoodery by Elizabeth Nelson

Too busy to cook? Need a personal chef? Peak's Addition has a new business in our neighborhood that offers this service using fresh ingredients and artisan techniques to prepare their meals. The MaD Foodery is in an historic, Spanish-style building at the corner of Worth and Haskell. According to owners Melanie and Dell, the building started life in the 1930s as a Good Luck Oil Station--a “GLOCO” gas station, famous for their architecture. The latest renovation added kitchen equipment from around the world and 10,000 Italian and Mexican tiles. The owners say they “love that we helped preserve a little piece of Dallas history.” They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner with a variety of ordering plans. Check out their offerings at www.themadfoodery.com. Their client base includes busy professionals, retirees, moms an singles, anyone who wants to eat well without cooking. They welcome suggestions from their new neighbors about additions to the menu or services. Melanie would like to extend a special offer to all our readers. Open an account online by March 30, and then email her at info@themadfoodery.com, and she will give you a @25 credit to use on your first order. Please remember how important it is that we support our local businesses.

Andrea’s Restaurant by Lisa McKnight

4816 Gaston, 214.823.3100
Hours: 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. except Tuesday and Sundays which are 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Sunday Brunch Coming Soon

After growing up in Guanajuato, Mexico, Alfonso Carmona settled in Dallas, Texas.  For 13 years he was the head chef at “Savino’s”, an upscale Italian restaurant where Hector’s on Henderson’s is located now.   He ventured on his own and opened a restaurant named after his daughter, “Andrea”.   Ten years ago, he chose his Peak Suburban locale to accommodate Hispanic clientele because he had planned on opening a Mexican Restaurant.   But soon, the patrons from “Savino’s” followed him to “Andrea’s” and were demanding more pasta and Italian food.  The restaurant has since transformed into an Italian restaurant “with a Spanish flair” according to Carmona.  Customers to Andrea’s come from all reaches.  “Many of my clients are from Highland Park and Lakewood, but I have people that drive from all over,” said Carmona.  Karla Chavez is one of those customers.   “I have been coming here from Mesquite for 10 years now, the food is delicious,” said the school teacher from GISD.
Carmona does not buy in bulk and tries to use the freshest ingredients.  East Dallsites are not the only ones noticing Andrea’s.  This restaurant has been written up in the Dallas Morning News, The Advocate, and D.Magazine, all with glowing reviews.
Alfonso Carmona is not just a local business owner, he is a resident too.  Living in Junius Heights, he is committed to improving the area.  Approximately 3 months ago, he started the “East Dallas Small Business Association” which now boasts over 20 members.  “I love this neighborhood, I have seen many good changes in the past 10 years,” said Carmona.

  • On January 30, 2009, MZ Grocery filed its motion for rehearing.  This was a procedural requirement for them to appeal the Administrative Law Judge's, and ultimately, TABC's ruling against them.  The motion was expected and PAHA, in connection with Cody McCullar of the Dallas City Attorney's Office, has filed a response. Because MZ Grocery has a right to appeal the decision that was rendered against them, it was important to start the appellate process so that a final resolution can be reached within a reasonable time.  Stay tuned for more updates from Walker Duke as they occur.

  • From Nicole and Tony Childs on Grigsby: We went to "Taqueria El Bambi" which is right next door to Jade Garden, on Bryan St. near the intersection of Fitzhugh, and we LOVED IT.  The place is clean, well lit, and run by a very nice English-speaking lady named Theresa.  She was incredibly friendly and warm, and gave us cheese and jalapeno tamales to try out for free. The food was delicious and authentic. We had the fajita and barbacoa soft corn tacos, with grilled onions, cilantro, limes, and green (spicy!) and red salsa.  It's a little family-run hole in the wall, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Try it out!

Victor’s Cafe Opening for Dinner by Elizabeth Nelson

Victor's Café, the host of our January meeting, located at 132 N. Peak, will soon be open for dinner. This little neighborhood café enjoyed opening its doors for Peak’s Addition on January 6th and will soon be open to the public in the evenings, Wednesday through Saturday. They are already open Monday – Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Beginning next week, they will also be open on certain evenings. Wednesday and Thursday they will stay open until 8:30 PM, and Friday and Saturday they will stay open until 9:00 PM.
For those of you who have not yet enjoyed Victor’s cuisine, they serve a variety of delicious breakfast entrees including but not limited to: breakfast sandwiches, breakfast tacos, migas, and huevos ranchero. For lunch and dinner they serve many affordable Mexican dishes as well as traditional American burgers with fries. Sometimes you just need a cheeseburger!
Victor’s will take your “to go” order over the phone if you are in a hurry, or you can dine in for any meal. I am personally looking forward to another affordable and delicious dinner option in our neighborhood. Oh, and you can bring your own alcoholic beverage of choice, so BYOB for dinner and enjoy!

The Taco Joint by Zelman Brounoff

In a sentence?  A delicious cornucopia of taste sensations wrapped in a tortilla.  O.K.  Let's back up a bit.  Actually, if you want great Mexican food at a great price served by caring employees in a fun, bright atmosphere, then this is the place for you.  You can eat healthy or go off your diet.  The healthy ingredients include grilled chicken, black beans and wheat tortillas.  We are all aware of the yummy, not so healthy alternatives, so choose accordingly.  Either way you won't be disappointed.

Open for breakfast and lunch only (breakfast only on Saturday), your morning selections include breakfast tacos with the usual options. Any combination of eggs, potatoes, cheese, bacon, beans, meats, etc. is available on your choice of tortilla.

Lunch offers the usual tacos, enchiladas, burritos, chalupas, quesadillas and salads in just about any combination you can imagine. I personally have sampled the breakfast tacos and tomatillo chicken enchiladas.  Both were fresh, hot and served with a side order of love from the attentive staff. The drinks are served with "Sonic" style crushed ice.  Prices run from inexpensive to reasonable, and napkins are free with any purchase. For more information, see www.thetacojoint.com.

Tacos El Guero - Contributed by Courtney Buterbaugh

Tacos El Guero is located at 4500 Bryan at Carroll. Shawn and I had the chance to try it yesterday for lunch and their tacos are great! The pork was excellent, Shawn also liked the barbecue. My favorite was a custom taco with simple melted cheese. They have great sauces, one hot and one mild. Fresh cilantro goes into every taco.

The Corinthian Bed & Breakfast featured in Real Simple Magazine

corinthian_bb2.jpgThe Corinthian Bed & Breakfast, located in the heart of Peak's Addition, was featured in Real Simple Magazine's Spring 2008 Travel issue.

In its 50 Hotels Under $150 article, Lori Bergamotto writes, "Dallas's city slogan is 'Live large, think big,' and that's exactly how things are done here. Upon arriving at this 1905 house you're greeted by an antique grand piano and a majestic staircase."

PAHA would like to congratulate our friends at the Corinthian on this recognition!

Ever wonder what to do if you find an injured wild animal or a baby bird that can't fly???

Just 10 minutes south of downtown Dallas is Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, a non-profit wildlife rescue organization that nurses animals back to health to be released back into the wild. If they cannot be released, Rogers will keep them and raise them, or possibly find another home for them at a zoo or elsewhere.

    Julian's

Julian Mancia has recently opened Julian’s, a Panaderia at Gaston and Carroll, right next door to the Subway. Mancia, originally from El Salvador, but most recently from the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, moved to Dallas to follow a dream of opening his own business. He said that Dallas offered good schools and a better standard of living than Los Angeles did, and since he had some family here, he decided to “give it a go.”
