Letter from the President

We recently got to experience the rare treat of a thick blanket of snow covering our neighborhood, turning our streets into beautiful scenes out of a postcard. The snow has since melted, but there is no reason the beauty can’t linger (albeit in a nonfrozen form). So I would like to invite everyone to our first “Peak’s Pick-Up” neighborhood beautification project on Saturday, March 6th from 9:00 a.m. – noon. At 9:00 a.m. sharp, we will meet at the parking lot of East Dallas Christian Church on the corner of Worth Street and Peak Street, where supplies will be distributed and tasks will be assigned. This will be a fun time of working with your neighbors, having a good laugh, mocking the graffiti taggers’ lack of creativity, and generally beautifying the neighborhood. “Sounds interesting, but what exactly will we be doing?” you may be wondering. Generally speaking, we will be picking up trash, cleaning up graffiti, and trimming overgrown vegetation (or dead branches) in vacant or deserted areas. The specifics, however, will be up to you. In the days leading up to Peak’s Pick-Up, I invite everyone to keep your eyes open for things we can clean up, graffiti we can wipe out, and overall beautification that can be done in a few hours by a dedicated group of weekend warriors. Email your suggestions to president@peaksaddition.org.
Everyone wants a clean neighborhood, but trash doesn’t pick itself up. Here is your chance to do your part to make it happen. It’s the perfect reason to wake up a little earlier on a Saturday, head down to the Taco Joint for some breakfast, and put on your work gloves for a few hours to make Peak’s Addition a little prettier.

Swiss Avenue Historic District Soiree to Benefit Neighborhood Park and Playground

Four Swiss Avenue homes will offer cuisine, cocktails, music and entertainment from around the world at “A Taste of Swiss” on Saturday, October 10. Italy, Brazil, India and Turkey will be represented at this fundraiser benefitting the Friends of Buckner Park. With passports in hand and the leadership of a tour guide, guests will tour each home experiencing the flavors, music and entertainment representative of each country’s culture. Tickets for this event are $100 per person and are available for purchase online at www.friendsofbucknerpark.org or in person at Needless Necessities (2926 N. Henderson Ave.) and Talulah Belle (2017 Abrams Rd.). Check-in will be from 6:30 to 7:00 pm at 5001 Swiss Avenue.
“A Taste of Swiss” is organized by residents of the four East Dallas historic districts (Swiss Avenue, Peak’s Suburban Addition, Munger Place and Junius Heights) and the Friends of Buckner Park as a fundraiser benefiting the restoration of Buckner Park. This neighborhood park, located at the corner of Worth Street and Carroll Avenue in Old East Dallas, also serves as the Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary School playground. Buckner Park is situated at an important gateway intersection linking Old East Dallas with Lakewood, Downtown, Fair Park and Deep Ellum. Unlike the timeless homes restored in the area, the park has deteriorated over time and has suffered from vandalism and neglect. The Friends of Buckner Park was formed to restore the park and make it a beautiful retreat for the entire community to enjoy.
“So far the community has been overwhelmingly supportive of the endeavors of the Friends of Buckner Park,” Andrea Nicolas, Friends of Buckner Park president, said. “Our vision for the park includes a walking trail, new playground equipment, a pavilion and a venue for annual fundraising events that will benefit the park and its restoration.”

“A Taste of Swiss is a unique opportunity for our guests to spend an intimate evening, with an international flair, in four beautifully restored early 20th Century Swiss Avenue homes,” Larry Waisanen, co-chairman of the event, said. “In addition to raising funds for the park, we want this event to help to create an awareness in the broader community of the tremendous opportunity that the restoration of this historic City Park offers to East Dallas and the surrounding area.”
Formed in 2006, the Friends of Buckner Park is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization created to revitalize Buckner Park in partnership with Dallas Parks and Recreation Department and make it a clean, safe, urban green space for the community.

Event tickets may be purchased with a donors’ contribution of $100 to Friends of Buckner Park. In exchange for this contribution, donors will receive a dining experience worth an estimated fair market value of $35. Therefore, for Federal income tax purposes, contribution deduction is limited to $65.

Social Update by Zelman Brounoff

What do you do with a dozen neighbors who find it too hot to stand on a porch?  You stand them in your kitchen.  That was Robert Kam's solution during the monthly Porch Party on the 19th of June. The fortified, 1899 foundation of said kitchen easily allowed said neighbors to enjoy an impromptu dish as they dished the dirt.   Analgesic libations went hand in hand with soothing conversations.  The defiant air conditioning allowed the attendees to prolong their informal "go see" without draining their enthusiasm. There's an old saying that I just made up:  "You can take the party out of the heat, but you can't take the heat out of the party."
These proceedings will be placed on hiatus until the Fall of the year so that the "porch" can once again be utilized in "The Porch Party."
Please check your listing for theaters and show times. Thank you to Robert Kam for hosting the June PAHA Porch Party!

Social Update - Crepuscule at the Starings by Zelman Brounoff

May 15, 2009.staringporch.jpg About two dozen neighbors, confidantes and homies braved the mild temperature and tranquil breeze for what can only be described as "a delicious, metaphysical goulash of all the human emotions." Borderline stimulating conversation and the aroma of median wines filled the air.  Aged canines and humans alike gazed and/or grazed upon succulent hors d'oeuvre.  The occasional jogger, transient or passerby leered in amazement at the level of recreation that was playing out in realtime before their eyes, like some post-Woodstock, dream state. Perhaps, they too would some day be fortunate to participate in a similar cornucopia of leisure and frivolity.  One can dream, can't one? This dream can be realized when the month of June promises to bear one more of these glamorous proceedings at a yet undetermined, historic stoop 'round this parts.  Updates will be divulged as they evolve.   Stay tuned and stay thirsty.

ACTION REQUIRED: MZ Grocery Hearing Thursday, March 26

Alright everyone, it's time to rally the troops for MZ Grocery one more time. They have filed their appeal and the matter is set for hearing next Thursday, March 26th at 9:30 a.m. It is being heard in the 44th District Court (Judge Carlos Cortez), which is located downtown in the George Allen Courts Building at 600 Commerce Street (this is different from where the trial was). This is very short notice, but that is the timeframe that the procedural rules dictate.

We need as many people there as possible. No one will have to speak and, in fact, the Protestants sole mouthpiece will be the Attorney General's Office (who represents TABC, the technical "Defendant"). However, just as with the original trial, neighborhood participation through attendence will be very important.

Date: Thursday, March 26
Time: arrive in court by 9:15
Location: George Allen Courts Building, 600 Commerce Street
Parking: there are various parking lots around the courthouse, but there is underground parking connected to the courthouse (entrance on Commerce St. by the Old Red Courthouse) that is very convenient. Approximately $8-$9.
Duration: The hearing could last anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours, but it should not be an all-day event like the trial.

This is the final step, if we are successful, at having alcohol sales discontinued at MZ Grocery. A final ruling is due by March 30th, so the end is potentially in sight. We need everyone's help to try and finish this out!

Central Patrol Division's Year End Crime Synopsis

You and your guests are invited to the Central Patrol Division’s Year End Crime Synopsis on Thursday, January 15th, beginning at 6:30pm, at the César Chávez Learning Center, 1710 N. Carroll Street.

The meeting’s focus is to inform residents of crime trends seen during the past year, of current crime trends, of successes in combating crime, and to encourage continued dialogue between the public and the police Department. The new Central Division Watch Commanders (Lieutenants in command of each watch, or “shift”, and responsible for different geographic areas within the Central Division) who have come to the Central Patrol Division will be introduced at the January meeting.

Past meetings have proven very successful. Information exchange, both from police to the public, and from the public to the police, has helped to identify areas and trends that needed to be addressed.

This meeting is open to the public.

If you have questions, please contact Officer Kelly Qualls (contact information is below), or Sgt. Dennis Craig at 214-670-4420.

Thank You, and we look forward to meeting you on the 15th.

Run the Rock 2008

On December 14th, the White Rock Marathon made its annual pass through Peak’s Addition. Once again, neighbors Daniel and Alex Watters generously hosted a party, along with new neighbors Stephanie and Thad Toups, in front of their homes.

Runners were greeted by the invigorating sounds of three bands: the Cat Daddies, Shig Shag, and Squirrel Attack. Neighbors diligently cheered on the runners while enjoying the great music and breakfast refreshments. This event was truly fun for the whole family! Some runners encouraged personal cheers by printing their names on their shirts so encouragement shouted by strangers could be made more meaningful!

If you have not experienced the neighborhood ‘Run the Rock’ party, make plans to join us next year. This is a great way to meet the neighbors and enjoy a beautiful day!

PAHA Holiday Celebration sock.gif

Hey everybody, 'tis the season for the annual PAHA Holiday party. It's finally here!

This year, Chris & Virginia Campbell have graciously offered to host the party at their wonderful home on Swiss Avenue. This is a purely social event (after some brief announcements and voting), so come eat, drink and be merry. The party starts at 7:00 on December 2nd.

Business matters to be covered including voting by membership on:

  • 2009 Board of Directors
  • Proposal for the allotment of funds from the Association treasury to purchase and plant trees along the streets of the neighborhood
  • Proposal to increase annual membership dues to cover new activities and increased costs

The homeowners' association has kindly agreed to provide a barrel of ice cold beer from our very own Shiner, Texas, as well as a few bottles of wine and the main course. When you RSVP (via Evite), please note how many guests you plan to bring and sign up to bring your favorite appetizer, side dish, or dessert, along with your favorite beverage. For those that prefer to stay out of the kitchen, help setting up or cleaning up would be greatly appreciated.

There is a small, $5/pp charge for non-PAHA members only (pay at the door). PAHA members are free. Once again, membership has benefits!

Please consider bringing a coat or a toy for the annual Zaragoza drive. See you on the 2nd! ...and Happy Holidays!

To receive full details for the event and to RSVP, contact postmaster@peaksaddition.org. If you would like to vote via an absentee ballot, please contact secretary@peaksaddition.org.

Summer Social by Janet Staring

Although temperatures were approaching the 100 degree mark, we had a great turnout for the PAHA Early Fourth of July Hot Dog/Ice Cream party. There were approximately 50 people in attendance and it was great fun. We were happy to see so many new faces and hope everyone will attend our next general meeting in August. Special thanks to Sharron Sadacca and her family for hosting the party and making fabulous homemade cake and ice cream. Also, thanks to Zelman Brounoff for slaving over the hot grill and cooking the hot dogs to perfection!

MZ Grocery Hearing Friday, March 28

Calling all concerned citizens.  The TABC has scheduled the hearing on the protest of MZ Grocery's beer and wine license for March 28, 2008 at 9:00 a.m.  The hearing will be held at the State Office of Administrative Hearings, located at 6333 Forest Park Road, Suite 150-A, Dallas, Texas 75235.  This is the third (and hopefully final!) setting for this hearing.
Many PAHA members attended the previous two settings, and that support was greatly appreciated--it sent a clear message to the administrative law judge that the neighborhood has united in this cause.  The neighborhood is calling on your support one more time.  We need as many neighborhood residents as possible (PAHA members or otherwise) to be in attendance at the March 28th hearing to demonstrate to the Court just how unified the community is on this issue.  If you have first hand knowledge of shady activities at or around MZ Grocery, or have documentary evidence of this (e.g. pictures, video, etc.), please contact Walker Duke at 214.891.8034, as you may have an opportunity to share your experiences with the Court.  Even if you do not wish to testify at the hearing, everyone's support in the form of their attendance will be vital.  If you cannot make it to the hearing but would still like to contribute to the cause, we would welcome letters to the Court.  Please call Walker if you are interested in providing this form of support.
Let's pack this hearing office on March 28th!

Mozart: Overture to The Magic Flute
Corigliano: Clarinet Concerto (1977)
Debussy: La Mer (w/projections)
Ravel: Bolero
See dramatic seascapes by British painter J.M.W. Turner projected on a larger than life screen to accompany Debussy's symphonic sketches of the sea in his La Mer. Hear acclaimed clarinetist Richard Stoltzman as he joins the DSO for Corigliano's splendidly theatrical Clarinet Concerto with musicians positioned all over the hall. Home Tour 2008 Benefits Buckner Park by JW Brasher

As 2007 came to a close the neighborhoods efforts to redesign and improve Buckner continued to move forward at a slow but steady pace. Michael Helman, Senior Parks Planner for the Parks and Recreation Department attended the associations Christmas Party in December and unveiled the new master plan for the Park. The design is the result of many meetings and much hard work by your neighbors and by the City Parks Department. At this point the Parks Department is proceeding with actions necessary on their end to bring the park plan to reality.

Run the Rock 2007

On December 9th, the White Rock Marathon made its annual pass through Peak’s Addition. Once again, neighbors Jarrod and Allison Bassman and Daniel and Alex Watters generously hosted a party in front of their homes.

Nathan Galbreath and Arthur Cirillo, both PAHA members, ran the marathon. If you have not experienced the neighborhood ‘Run the Rock’ party, make plans to join us next year. This is a great way to meet the neighbors and enjoy a beautiful day!

Preservation Dallas Fall Architectural Tour

pd_miller-house.jpgThe Preservation Dallas fall architectural tour on Saturday, October 20 presents some of the finest examples of the Revivalist styles, a period of design popularized in the late 19th century until World War II.

Various regional styles such as the Southern antebellum mansions, Spanish Missions and New England Colonials provided inspiration for a new twentieth-century look. Houses emulating Norman French cottages, Elizabethan manors and Italian villas were also re-invented. This year’s general tour will feature six Revivalist style houses from Southern Colonial to Spanish Eclectic.

Patron ticket holders will visit an additional house in Preston Hollow reinterpreting the Edwardian style.

Chaired by Bonnie Bauer and the Pacesetters Real Estate Networking Group, the patron and general tour will begin at the Angelika Theater at Mockingbird Station at 8:30 a.m. with registration.

Our keynote speaker will be W. Brown Morton III, international authority on historic preservation and co-author of the Secretary of Interior Standards for Historic Projects.

Citizens Fire Academy

The Dallas Citizens Fire Academy offers insight into the daily lives of firefighters. The inaugural class received 9 three-hour classes taught by various members of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department plus one 8 hour class on the last day of the series learning about methods used by the Urban Search and Rescue Team (US&R), thus giving one a greater appreciation for the firefighters and their responsibilities.

In the classroom various important topics in fire science are taught. These are abbreviated versions of those taught to the firefighter recruits. They cover topics such as hydrology, types of fires, hazardous materials, and problems associated with different building structures. In addition, “hands-on” experience is obtained in areas such as wearing the weighty firefighter bunker gear, handling a fire hose, climbing the ladder of a ladder truck, entering a smoke-filled building, and putting out a fire while experiencing the incredible heat from that fire. It is truly an eye-opening experience.

A new session of the Dallas Citizen’s Fire Academy is about to begin. The time commitment is one hour per week for 10 weeks.
