Confused About OneDAY? Don't Be!

OneDAY starts March 1 for 180,000 households in Oak Cliff, Southwest Dallas, West Dallas, Southeast Dallas, South Dallas, Pleasant Grove, East Dallas, and Northeast Dallas.

Continue reading to find out the answers to your questions about OneDAY Dallas. If you are interested in having the Sanitation Department attend an upcoming PAHA meeting to answer questions or to explain the program or how to recycle, please contact president@peaksaddition.org.

QUESTION: When will I find out what my OneDAY is?

ANSWER: Each household being switched to OneDAY should have received a letter from the City by now indicating the new collection day. It is the day written in orange at the top of the letter. Each household will also get a cart hanger in February telling them their OneDAY. If you still have questions, you can call 214-671-8877.

QUESTION: Is everybody who now puts their garbage and recycling in the alley going to be switched to the curb? I got a letter with a red box at the bottom that talks about switching from the alley to the curb for collection.

ANSWER: No. The change to curb service only applies to two groups of people. The first group is people with alley collection who also currently use bags or non-city issued containers for their garbage. That affects about 6,000 homes. The second (and smaller) group are those who live in a small handful of areas of northeast Dallas where the alleys are too narrow or obstructed for the collection trucks to pass without damaging property. That’s less than 2,000 homes. The overwhelming majority of the 180,000 households being switched to OneDAY will NOT have to change where they place their garbage and recycling for collection.

QUESTION: How will I get a city-issued garbage roll cart if I don’t already have one?

ANSWER: If you have a Water service account with the City and you now place garbage in your alley in bags for collection, the Sanitation Department will deliver a garbage roll-cart to you in February. You should not start using it until March.

QUESTION: How do I get a blue recycling roll cart?

ANSWER: You can either request one online at www.OneDAYDallas.com or you can call 311 or 214-671-8877 and one will be delivered to you. You don’t have to wait until March to request the blue recycling roll cart.

QUESTION: My service is being cut in half with weekly collection; does this also mean my Sanitation bill will be cut in half?

ANSWER: OneDAY is not “cutting service in half” it’s actually rebalancing the number of times the City picks up garbage (decreased to once-a-week under OneDAY) and recycling (increased to once-a-week under OneDAY). This rebalance is based on an analysis of needs across the city. Most households don’t use or need twice weekly collection of garbage. And those who did have found that since they’ve been recycling, nearly half the things they used to throw away now go into the recycling roll cart.

The Sanitation bill WAS reduced, so you’re already getting those savings now. The Sanitation fee was reduced by 64 cents per month in October 2009. This reduction was largely because of savings realized by the conversion of 62,000 households to OneDAY in previous years. As more people start recycling under the OneDAY program in March, additional savings could be realized and will be considered as the City prepares its budget for the next fiscal year. Keep recycling – and we can maximize those savings!

QUESTION: How will I know what can be recycled?

ANSWER: A list with pictures of recyclable items is printed onto the top of the blue recycling roll cart. You can also visit www.OneDAYDallas.com to find out what goes into the cart. If you still have questions, you can call 311.

QUESTION: When does OneDAY start?

ANSWER: March 1, 2010

QUESTION: Where can I get more information?

ANSWER: Visit www.OneDAYDallas.com, or call 214-671-8877.
