Julian's
Julian Mancia has recently opened Julian’s, a Panaderia at Gaston and Carroll, right next door to the Subway. Mancia, originally from El Salvador, but most recently from the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, moved to Dallas to follow a dream of opening his own business. He said that Dallas offered good schools and a better standard of living than Los Angeles did, and since he had some family here, he decided to “give it a go.”
The bakery specializes in “mini pies,” delicious (he let me sample one!) pastries filled with guava, pineapple, apple, and custard. He’s also selling pupusas (“tortilla pockets”), an El Salvadoran treat stuffed with pork or cheese or both. Pupusas make a delicious lunch or dinner and warm up well if you don’t eat them right away. In addition, customers can get coffee and café latte at Julian’s as well as ham and egg sandwiches, muffins, cookies, and a variety of other sweet treats. Julian’s next menu item to add will be cakes for all occasions. Customers can eat in the restaurant but Mancia is also sending a lot of his products out to high end restaurants and coffee shops around Dallas.
Mancia learned to cook from his mother who works in the store with him and is his main baker. He says that he changes her recipes sometimes and that gets her a little bit upset. “Adding just a little bit of oil to a recipe starts a bit of a fight with her,” he says with a smile. Regardless of who gets credit for the recipes, the treats at Julian’s are well worth a taste.
Julian’s: 4420 Gaston Ave., Monday-Friday 7 am to 7 pm, Saturday 7 am to 5 pm, and Sunday 8 am to 1 pm.

Seriously, the pupusas at Julian's are AWESOME. They make a delicious, last minute dinner and a nice alternative to pizza. They're super reasonably priced. Please support locally owned businesses, especially something as yummy as this one. Julian is super nice.

I second the comment on the pupusas - they're excellent! Be sure to get Julian's special salsa and cabbage to go on top!

We are big fans of Julian's Bakery. Julian Mancia goes above and beyond in customer service. Will also echo previous comments on the pupusas. Outstanding! Look for new menu items soon.
